Rodney Brooks, a director at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, stole the show at the "Beyond Cyberspace" conference in San Jose in 2001 when he predicted that the 21st Century would be the millennium of the robot; a time when robots would become more human and humans would become more robotic.

He described a world where bots would answer our telephones, open our mail, deliver documents between departments, service our cars, do our gardens, make the coffee, tidy up and generally automate our lives in ways we could only imagine before.

Five years on and 'automation' is the word that's on everyone's lips - from housewives, scientists, to business owners, people everywhere are discovering new ways of improving performance, automating their daily tasks and reducing their workloads.
